Indeed, the psychological study of „information overload“ began in 1960 with James G. Miller’s seminal research exploring how information input overload affects human performance and decision-making.

This time, coping means not only developing different psychological mindsets but also rethinking what we’re seeking with the information in the first place: Not just knowledge, but wisdom. We want to develop mastery, not merely to acquire facts.

And wisdom requires practice and experience.

The biggest questions for leaders: How do you reshape your organization to become a place where people become wiser judges of information, not merely better at acquiring the right information at the right moment? It takes wisdom not only to evaluate outputs and answers, but to create the right context for AI tools. This means understanding which proprietary data and insights will create that context. In a noisy information space, how can your people learn to discern which insights matter, and what to pay attention to?

The Knowledge Dilemma Reshaping Your Organization

At the World Economic Forum’s recent annual meeting, I joined academic leader Deborah Prentice from Cambridge and AI pioneer Aidan Gomez from Cohere to explore what we call the „knowledge dilemma.“ We’ve moved from a world where information was scarce to one of overwhelming abundance.

From Information Abundance to the Need for Discernment

This shift demands we rethink how we acquire and maintain knowledge inside organizations in key ways. First, since the bottleneck to knowledge is no longer access to information, but rather curation and attention, the challenge of leaders today is helping people focus on the right things at the right time. This means that discernment is the new power skill, which includes evaluating, synthesizing, and asking better questions. Discernment extends not only to how we’re prompting AI and evaluating its outputs, but also to considering its limitations, and the contexts in which humans must continue to play a leading role.

Why Human Judgment Must Remain Central in AI Systems

One such context is in the design of AI systems. Because these systems are probabilistic rather than deterministic – in other words, you cannot guarantee the same output with the same input – we need ways to validate outcomes and explain how they came to certain conclusions. Without intentionally designing systems that surface uncertainty and require human judgment, AI’s speed could displace the deliberation and discernment that leads to sound decisions. While AI can augment thinking, it must be built to preserve human responsibility and agency, or else it risks replacing the cognitive work that underpins accountability. We need to acknowledge that the more we cede agentic control to our tools, the more we give up that control ourselves.

Upskilling Can’t Be Outsourced to AI Alone

The key takeaway is simple. Using AI tools effectively means building systems that ensure we don’t outsource our most critical human skills, gradually eroding the critical thinking that happens when instant answers replace the struggle of discovery. After all, the difference between getting an answer and struggling through the process of discovery is where upskilling, and the development of organizational capability, actually happens.

This is precisely why we don’t believe a basic LLM alone is enough for upskilling. While AI can provide smart answers and surface information, real skill development depends on access to learning infrastructure, not simply to information and agents. An LLM might teach you about coding, but building coding mastery requires a comprehensive platform that can introduce hands-on practice environments, structured learning journeys, human coaching, peer collaboration, and verified outcomes all tailored to an individual’s experience and an organization’s needs.

Redesigning Your Upskilling Ecosystem for Wisdom

Consider this: When was the last time someone in your organization sat with a difficult problem long enough to develop genuine insight? When everything feels urgent and every question has an immediate AI-generated response, we risk losing the mental muscle that builds wisdom through deliberate thought.

Based on what we’re seeing at Udemy with millions of learners navigating this transition, here are a few forward-thinking ways that leaders are rebuilding their organizational systems to preserve, and even strengthen, attention, wisdom and critical thinking:

1. Create Learning Modes That Force Deliberation

Instead of allowing AI to provide instant solutions, design workflows that require teams to wrestle with problems first. At Udemy, we’ve seen remarkable results with our Role Play feature—AI-powered scenarios that encourage learners to practice decision-making before revealing optimal approaches. In just three months, instructors created over 3,300 scenarios because they recognized the value of guided struggle.

2. Build Human-AI Collaboration, Not AI Dependence

The most effective teams we work with treat AI as a thinking partner. They use AI for initial synthesis and scenario testing, but preserve human judgment for critical decisions. As we discussed at Davos, AI excels at solving, but humans lead in asking the right questions and ensuring quality.

3. Design for Outcome-Driven Learning Journeys

Information abundance requires outcome focus. Instead of offering your people endless training options, create structured pathways that connect learning directly to measurable business results. Our data shows AI-driven learning paths help professionals pivot 20% faster to emerging needs. For example: the skill isn’t just Python, it’s knowing which Python skills to learn right now for your specific role.

4. Surface Uncertainty and Provenance

Require your AI tools to show their work. Systems that surface confidence levels, sources, and reasoning help maintain the critical thinking muscle your organization needs. This transparency preserves trust and enables the judgment that separates wise decisions from fast ones.

From Instant Answers to Lasting Capability

The organizations that thrive in this era of abundant information will be those that preserve and strengthen human discernment while leveraging AI as an amplifier of wisdom, not a substitute for it. The attention crisis is real, but it’s also solvable. The opportunity for all organizational leaders is to choose design for wisdom rather than settle for the illusion of instant intelligence.

Why Information Abundance is Creating a Poverty of Wisdom It was 1971 when Nobel laureate Herbert Simon first sounded this …

[350

0":"post-153461","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"hentry","6":"category-ai-transformation","8":"without-featured-image
https://business-staging.udemy.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/the-attention-crisis-behind-ai-promise.jpg.webp
author","author_image","time_to_read
AI has turned information abundance into an attention crisis, reviving Herbert Simon’s warning about a “poverty of attention.” This blog explores the “knowledge dilemma” leaders face and argues that true upskilling requires discernment, human judgment, and deliberate practice.
